How to choose a roofer in Teesside

Most of us can't climb up and check the work, so it pays to check the roofer instead. What to ask before you say yes.

A roof is one of the few jobs you can't easily inspect yourself, and it's a trade where a doorstep cold-caller can do a lot of damage. A few checks before you say yes go a long way.

Get two or three written quotes

A proper quote says exactly what's being done, the materials, whether scaffolding is included, how waste will be taken away and when payment is due. If one quote is far cheaper than the others, ask what it leaves out.

Check who they are

Look the business up on Google and read the reviews, including how they answer the bad ones. Ask for photos of similar jobs, and ask to see their public liability insurance. A good roofer won't mind.

Ask what's guaranteed

Ask how long the work is guaranteed for, what the guarantee covers, and whether it would still be honoured if the business closed. Get it in writing.

Building Regulations

In England, if more than a quarter of a roof is being re-covered, Building Regulations usually apply. A roofer registered with a competent person scheme can sign the work off themselves; otherwise it goes through the council's building control. Ask which it will be.

Watch out for

Anyone who knocks unannounced to say they've spotted a problem, pressure to decide today, or a request for most of the money before work starts. If you agree the job in your own home, you normally have 14 days to cancel under the Consumer Contracts Regulations.

Roofers customers rate

Every roofer in our lists has at least 4.7 stars on Google from 25 or more reviews: roofers in Middlesbrough and roofers in Redcar.
